Yolanda Chetwynd

Yolanda Chetwynd is a practicing artist who has been living in Newark, Delaware since 1987. Yolanda studied painting in London and in 1982 received a Bachelor of Arts First Class Honors, from Camberwell School of Art. She continued graduate work at the Slade, part of London University, and in 1987 received her High Diploma. (equivalent to a Masters of Fine Arts in the United States). While studying painting in England, she received scholarships and awards for her work, which included the prestigious Boise scholarship, enabling her to paint in India for a year. In 1987, Yolanda attended the Art Institute of Chicago, finally completing a Masters in Professional Studies in Art Therapy at the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY in 1989. Since moving to Newark, DE she has continued to paint and show her work nationally and internationally. In addition to painting in her studio she is devoted to educational pursuits. She was selected as a resource artist-in-residence by the Delaware Division of the Arts and she has worked with the Department of Education to help develop arts integrated units that combine arts study with core academic curriculum. Yolanda was invited as a teaching art fellow for the Robert Rauschenberg workshop "The Power of Art 2002," which was held in Washington, D.C., and was selected as one of eight regional teaching artists from National Association of Aesthetic Education Institutes AIAE, associated with Lincoln Center Institute for Arts in Education, in NYC, to implement a series of national training workshops. Her role was to mentor fellow teaching artists in developing advanced understanding of the specific philosophy and educational processes developed over years of Aesthetic Education practice, as it is shared among member sites of the AIAE. The work was supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and others and produced a series of seven workshops, from May 2004 to August 2006. Yolanda served on the Delcaps Board of Directors, as New Castle representative of coaches for Odyssey of the Mind for seven years. She is currently serves on the Newark Arts Alliance Board, a community based arts organization.

News: For the second consecutive summer, Dr Mahasveta Barua is running a course ENGL 365: Studies in Literary Genres, Types and Movements: The Graphic Novel (3 credits) This course will examine the graphic novel as a literary genre. Graphic novels are an important form of literature in France and Belgium, countries which have a long standing history of comics and comic books. In these regions, comics are known as bande dessinée or drawn strips. Yolanda Chetwynd's web based Graphic Novel will be one of the focal works. Last summer she was a guest lecture and an administrative assistant on this course.
